Years ago, a friend of mine was once saved by someone who knew how to perform first aid and that honestly inspired me not only to learn first aid but also to teach other people how simple techniques could save someone’s life.
First Aid Training could be the most important course you’ll ever take in your life. In fact, it is an opportunity to discover how to do some truly life-saving stuff. It will get you armed with all the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to deliver potentially life-saving assistance.
It’s always best to come prepared for a whole day of learning. I have put together these guidelines to give you a head start on what to expect on a first aid training course.
Preparation for a First Aid Course
A few small things can be done to make everything go smoothly. In regards to the clothing, it is ideal to wear loose-fitting, comfortable casual clothes. The nature of some first aid demonstrations requires kneeling, which can be uncomfortable and difficult if you’re wearing tight-fitting clothes.
Some first aid courses do not require any prior readings/knowledge. Usually, only a learning guide will be provided unless you take advanced first aid, which requires pre-course reading and study before attending the course.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, show up on the day of training with a positive attitude and willingness to participate in different practical scenarios.
Once you’ve got everything sorted, it’s time to get started with the actual training.
Learning First Aid Course
A combination of practical and theory sessions will be used to teach first aid principles. You’ll learn how to examine a casualty, ensure scene safety, perform basic life support (BLS), resuscitation, use a defibrillator (AED), and deal with bleeding and trauma.
The training will cover other essential first aid skills, including wound care, management of burns, and assisting with choking and breathing emergencies. In addition, you will be taught how to identify shocks, deal with fractures, and cope with sudden illnesses like stroke, seizures, and heart attack.
Most first aid courses can be completed in one day, but some courses may require a couple of days, depending on the complexity and content of the course. You’ll receive a first aid certification upon successful completion of the training.
As a brief warning, some of the training’s content will feature scenarios that directly mimic real-life situations during an emergency, which other people may find to be emotionally upsetting. The trainer may give extra assistance to those participants who are truly feeling uncomfortable.
Putting First Aid Lessons into Practice
At the end of the training, practice tests and exams will be provided to everyone in the class to assess the level of understanding you’ve gained. The skills you acquired during the training will help you overcome a potentially life-threatening emergency long enough for the emergency medical services to arrive.
